When you take the family to a holiday blockbuster, it’s fun to be frightened by on-screen predators. But it’s sensible to take precautions against microscopic organisms that may be lurking in the theater.
Our health deserves extra attention over the holidays, which can be as stressful as they are fun. Our immune systems are more vulnerable because we spend more time indoors. We get less sunshine and vitamin D. We may also let holiday goodies distract us from eating the fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods that nourish us.
But if, despite precautions, we do catch a cold or a virus, it’s not the end of the world. Some antigen exposure will improve and strengthen our immune systems, protecting against subsequent exposure to the same or related organisms.
Also, human beings are social animals. Over and over, research shows that we fare better in groups, surrounded by people who love and believe in us. For example, grandparents benefit from spending time with young children, and vice versa.
So relax and enjoy the holidays. See a movie with your kids, your grandkids, your nieces or your nephews. It’s good for your health!
